Why would I make backups to Dropbox?

There are two kinds of people: those who back up their data, and those who are yet to start.
An old saying

We hope you're already backing up your computer to an external drive with Time Machine or a similar tool. These are onsite backups.

However, should disaster strike - like a failing hard drive, or worse - it's a good idea to have your data backed up offsite.

If you're already using Dropbox or Google Drive, these are great places to back up your important files to, as you can easily access the backups from any computer you're logged into.

Why would I want to encrypt my backups?

If one would give me six lines written by the hand of the most honest man, I would find something in them to have him hanged.
Cardinal Richelieu

We live in the world of hacks, leaks, and security vulnerabilities. Even though you may very well have nothing to hide, encryption is becoming a basic necessity.

Ultimately the responsibility of securing your own data lies with you; it only makes sense to encrypt backups of your important data at the point of origin, when they are created.

What solution do you offer?

Rebel Backup runs on your Mac or Windows PC and lets you quickly select the folders or files you'd like to back up, encrypted, to Dropbox or Google Drive. You control what and how often is backed up.

Why would I trust you?

You don't have to. All encryption happens right on your computer, with a secret key accessible only to you, and stored securely in your Mac's local Keychain or Windows' Credentials Management (CredMan) database.

Incidentally, this means that no one would be able to decrypt your backups without having your secret key, including yourself, should you lose the key.

Luckily, the app provides a way to securely export the key, either to a different computer or for storage in a safe place (or places).

What encryption do you use? Did you roll your own crypto?

We're software developers, not cryptographers, and we know better than to do that. Instead, we use libsodium - a modern, portable, widely used crypto library.

Specifically, for backup encryption we use XChaCha20-Poly1305 - a modern cryptographic construction that provides authenticated encryption and places no practical limits on the size of encrypted files.

We use the XSalsa20 stream cipher with Poly1305 MAC for authentication when exporting the secret key from the app.

What if I don't need to encrypt all of my backups?

It's OK, you can back up some or all of your items as Zip archives instead (encrypted backups use compression as well).

Even without encryption, Rebel Backup gives you the convenience of quickly backing up the necessary items to the cloud at the necessary moment.

OK, I'm convinced. Where do I start?

Download our free 30-day trial. Add the files and folders you'd like to back up into the app, and confirm (or adjust) their destination in your Dropbox or Google Drive folder.

Before the first backup you would be asked to set up a new secret key. After that, you just select the items you want to back up, and press a button to make the backups.

Once the trial is over, you would need to purchase a license to create new backups (extracting an existing backup is possible even with the free version).

This is interesting, but I have questions.

No problem - we'd be happy to answer any questions you might have. Drop us an email at rebelbackup@svsware.com.
